A challenging and scenic 13.1 mile (approx) off road half marathon
We look forward to welcoming you to the 2015 Durham Coast Half Marathon. Please take time to read through the race information which should tell you all you need to know for race day.
Please note this is a very challenging route with many desents and climbs and with possibly over 300 steps along the route. it is not for the faint hearted and by no means a PB route.
It has been Garmin measured to be as close to 13.1 miles as possible.
This event is organised by the National trust as a means of raising much needed funds as well as show casing a fabulous stretch of coast. All profits from the event go directly to the National trust and are used locally to fund our conservation work.
Location and Car Parking
The race begins at from Noses Point, Seaham situated off the A182. Ample free car parking is available at Spectrum Business Park, around 5 minutes walk from the start area. Spectrum cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage of property or vehicles in their car park. You are strongly advised to use this car park and return using the shuttle at the end of the race. The finish of the race is at Crimdon Dene, situated off the A1086. There is limited parking here. The post code for sat nav is TS27 4BL.
Mini buses will be running to transport runners between the start and finish areas. These must be paid for in advance with the entry fee. We will not be able to accommodate runners who have not paid in advance. Unfortunately we will also not be able to transport supporters.
Buses will be transporting runners from the finish area to the start between 9:30 and 10:30.
Buses will be running from the finish area to the car park at Spectrum Business Park at regular intervals at the end of the race.
The course is entirely off road, is challenging and very scenic. It is characterised by gently undulating sections along the cliff top coastal path interspersed with challenging a descents and ascents through a series of denes. There are many steps to tackle along the way. There is also a section through the picturesque woodland in Hawthorn Dene nature reserve. The course is approximately 13.1 miles and has been measured using GPS.
Race HQ, Toilets and Start Area
Race HQ will be situated in a gazebo by the car park at Noses Point. There will be ample portaloos situated in the car park. Please be ready to assemble at the start line on the path in from of race HQ before 11:00.
You will need to collect your race number from Race HQ on the day of the race. You should receive details of your race number by email ahead of race day, so please bring this information with you and allow plenty of time for collecting your number. Please attach your race number to the front of your body so it can clearly be seen.
The finish area is on the grass close to the car park at Crimdon Dene. Please stay in the order you finish as you move through the finishing funnel.
There are three water stations along the route. Water will also be available at the finish. If you use gels or other sports nutrition on the course, please do not litter. Leave any litter either at the water station or hang on to it and dispose of it responsibly yourself.
First aiders will be present throughout the race. If you require assistance please advise a race marshal who will call for assistance.
Prizes and Refreshments
All runners will receive a technical t-shirt and goody bag. In addition each runner in entitled to a free cup of tea and piece of cake at the refreshment stand.
There will be prizes for the first three men and ladies, as well as prizes for age category winners. The prize presentation will take place at approximately 1:30pm outside the refreshments tent. Any runners not able to collect their prize will be sent it through the post.
Durham Heritage Coast Family Fun
Durham Heritage Coast will be providing entertainment for spectators and families close to the finish area from 11.00 onwards; there will be entertainment from Punch and Judy; hear Captain Raggy Beard tell his pirate tales, try your hand at circus skills with Marko, meet the Medieval Woodturners and the Crimdon Little Tern wardens will be with us to tell you all about these rare birds who visit Crimdon every year and make this such a special place.
